Project Brief
While my heart’s set on electrical, I enjoy tinkering with mechanical design. In my Engineering Graphics course, we learned to hand draw isometric and orthographic projections, and for the final we were tasked with turning some of these sketches into a parametric SolidWorks assembly. I chose to model a rack-and-pinion steering mechanism that could be dropped into a to-scale LEGO vehicle.
What I Built
- Hand sketches — Generated front, top, and side views with proper hidden-line conventions.
- Parametric parts — Spur gear (pinion) derived from AGMA formulas and known LEGO Technic component diameters and ratios; rack with matching module and pressure angle.
- Assembly & mates — Applied dynamic mates in SolidWorks to simulate the intended behavior.
- Animation — Built a motion study showing steering input and exported the clip for embedding.
Tools & Standards
- SolidWorks 2024
- ANSI fits & tolerances
- AGMA gear formulas
- Engineering Graphics (orthographic conventions)
